Our research is focused on the application of biologically active polysaccharide materials and adult stem cells to problems in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.  We aim to apply engineering principles to the study and manipulation of living cells with the ultimate goal of producing tissue regeneration, repair, or in vitro tissue models.  The design, synthesis and evaluation of biologically active materials are integral parts of this effort.  Among natural polymers, the ionic polysaccharides known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are of particular interest in our work. We are currently examining their use as components of tissue scaffolds for a number of tissue repair and regeneration projects.

Professor Matthew has been featured in a  short video in his Tissue engineering and biomaterials lab that will be used along with other WSU videos for future students recruitment to WSU

Congratulation to Dr. Therese Bou-Akl for accepting a postdoctoral position in Dr. Pamela VandeVord's lab
